Valtice castle

Baroque castle located in Moravian town Valtice in Břeclav region in the Czech Republic. It is preserved as a national cultural heritage of Czech Republic since 1995 and in 1996 it was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Index as a part of Lednice - Valtice Areal. For several centuries it was a princely residence of the Liechtenstein family. It is in possession of the state (administration is provided by the National Heritage Institute) and it is open to public.

COLONNADE ON REISTEN

The Colonnade on the Reistenberg hill (called also Hummock), which rises on the border of current Southern Moravia and Lower Austria, is one of the last pieces of work by architect Josef Hardtmuth in the Liechtenstein´s service. Hardtmuth designed a classical colonnade shape; on its axis he placed a free interpretation of a Roman triumphal arch. This is one of the highlights of the Empire’s triumphalism in our country.

DIANA´S TEMPLE (RENDEZ-VOUS)

After having finished the farmhouse Nový dvůr and presenting the project for the hunting chateau Pohansko, the prince Jan I ordered his court architect Josef Hardtmuth to design another voluptuary building – Diana´s Temple. It is also known as Rendez-vous probably because it was used as a meeting place and facilities for hunters before hunting. Diana´s Temple is located near Valtice on the left of the road to Poštorná. The architect Josef Poppelack managed the construction work from 1810-1813.

BELVEDER PLEASURE-HOUSE

The Belveder was built in 1804-1806 upon the initiative of the ruling Prince Alois I of Liechtenstein (1759-1805). It was designed by the architect Josef Hardmuth (1758-1816). The pleasure-house, besides its beautification and representation functions, also had a practical function – it was the centre of a pheasantry.

CHAPEL OF ST. HUBERT

The Chapel of St. Hubert is a neogothic chapel in the Lednice-Valtice Area. A triangular shaped chapel with three Gothic arches and ribbed vault which was built in the middle of the Boří les forest according to plans by Georg Wingelmüller under the rule of Alois II Prince of Liechtenstein in 1855. In the middle of the chapel, there is a statue of St. Hubert standing on a pedestal with statues of angels.

HERB GARDEN

The unique herb garden lies very close to Valtice castle in the place of former castle garden centre. In thematic garden beds, you will find over 300 species of herbs that are useful not only for treatment, but also for the dyeing of fabrics or for the seasoning of dishes. You will get to know the plants that have always been considered as magical, and you will find out which plants are irresistible attractions for colourful butterflies.

CITY MONUMENT CIRCUIT

Valtice is a wine town in Mikulov wine sub-region. Historical centre of the town is preserved as a city monument zone. Lednice-Valtice Areal is a landscape monument zone.
